Company Profile:

Santa Cruz Community Credit Union (SCCCU) is a community-development and low-income certified credit union, serving Santa Cruz County and parts of Monterey County.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Collections Manager, the Credit & Collections Specialist will be responsible for preserving SCCCU’s assets by controlling delinquent accounts; collecting delinquent loan payments and/or recovering collateral; assisting other staff and disposing of repossessed collateral, in addition to processing insurance claims related to death, disability, collateral protection and other insurance coverage to offset loan losses, while ensuring a professional interface with SCCCU’s members and staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Possess requisite knowledge of SCCCU’s loan and collection policies and procedures including: consumer loans, mortgage loans, credit cards, commercial lending, loan insurance, regulations affecting loans and collections, compliance requirements, documentation and processing methods;
  • Contact delinquent borrowers/co-borrowers regarding prompt repayment of delinquent accounts, while conferring and assessing reasons for delinquencies in an effort to rectify the situation;
  • When required, initiate legal action and determine when/if collateral should be repossessed and subsequent action, under the direction of supervisor;
  • Work with all departments to ensure collection problems are resolved in a timely manner;
  • Obtain credit reports for delinquent borrowers/co-borrowers;
  • Maintain collection records, as required by regulators or management; assists in retrieving files and re-filing as needed for audits; creates documentation and status tracking methods to ensure timely completion of outstanding items and tasks;
  • Review members’ accounts to determine qualification in connection with Service Members Civil Relief, if requested;
  • Promote use of financial education/counseling and workshops offered by SCCCU members;
  • Complete all reports as assigned by supervisor; ensure work is organized and that all processes and reports assigned are completed by deadlines set
  • Actively participate in training, department, staff meetings and activities;
  • Complete all required annual regulatory and lending training, as assigned;
  • Represent SCCCU at external events and various business development opportunities, as needed;
  • Maintain organized system for all work that provides clear documentation paths; ensure logs and spreadsheets are kept on backed-up PC network, current and archived appropriately;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Skip trace accounts and conduct investigations to locate missing borrowers/co-borrowers and collateral; files subsequent claims, as required;
  • Assist with the loan audit process, balance due letters, consumer loan denial letters, tracking /  verifying mailing of denial letters, procedure writing and follows up on missing items;
  • Collect negative balances and returned items;
  • Send delinquent accounts to external collection agencies, as directed by supervisor;
  • Process, log and maintains bankruptcy accounts and maintain related approved processes and procedures; 
  • Work with supervisor to file claims on recoveries including life insurance, Credit Life & Disability, GAP and CPI claims; request refunds on mechanical and gap warranties purchased through auto dealers and/or CPI;
  • Accept and monitor consumer credit counselling payments
  • File proof of claim involving deceased accounts.
  • Submit payments for posting.
  • Prepare delinquent loans, credit cards and negative share accounts for charge off;
  • Review delinquent account payments, charged off / credit counseling accounts and loans being paid by the Chapter 13 Trustee and perform requisite follow-up processes;
  • Perform related other tasks, as required.

Collections/Recoveries

Monitoring Risk/Reporting

  • Prepare delinquent loans, credit cards and negative share accounts for charge off;
  • Review delinquent account payments, charged off / credit counseling accounts and loans being paid by the Chapter 13 Trustee and perform requisite follow-up processes;
  • Perform related other tasks, as required.

Qualifications: 

  • 2-5 years of related experience within a similar environment;
  • Minimum Associate’s Degree in a business-related discipline; Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Proficient computer and Microsoft Office software (particularly Excel and Word);
  • Broad knowledge of principles, practices and laws governing financial institutions;
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong mathematical acumen;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and work to strict deadlines.

Working Hours:

8:30AM – 5:15PM Monday - Friday

Compensation:

Grade 8 - $41,000 ($19.38/hr) - $50,378 ($24,22/hr), DOE, non-exempt; company-wide bonus scheme; company subsidized health benefits (medical, dental, vision); company-sponsored life insurance, loan discounts (must be a member) paid vacation, sick time and public holidays; 401k plan.
